about kibitka

Kibitka is a small gallery in the heart of the German town of Lörrach with a worldwide reputation for its exquisite selection of antique and contemporary handmade textiles, carpets and kelims and its exclusive range of ethnic and custom-made jewellery. Established over thirty years ago, the gallery is especially known for its fine embroideries and jewellery from India, colourful handwoven kelims from Afghanistan and delicate silk shawls from Kashmir.

Lörrach provides a perfect location for Kibitka as the main market town in the dreilanderecke region of Germany intersecting with the borders of both France and Switzerland, and a short distance from the Swiss city of Basel, home to many of the gallery's collector clients. The Kibitka stock is always selected for its appeal to the discerning taste of three of Europe's most sophisticated connoisseur markets.

Owner Undine Berczuk is a recognised expert in Kibitka's craft forms. Every year she visits the East to select the finest examples for her collections. Each piece is individually chosen with her long experience and knowledge of the cultures and her trusted relationships with merchants who discover works long hidden from all others and put aside in readiness for Undine's next visit, knowing she will understand and appreciate the finest gems and weavings that are increasingly hard to find.

The jewellery of Kibitka is justly celebrated: silver armbands & bracelets, gold & silver rings & earrings, most with precious or semi-precious stones, necklaces in so many stones & metals that Undine's advice is usually needed to choose that special piece which best suits your skin and lifestyle. Prices vary from a few euros for unique earrings to many thousands for treasures like an antique gold, silver & cornelian Turkoman bracelet, a precious Tibetan coral & turquoise necklace or a rare torque neckpiece by the Couchi tribe from the Afghan/Iran border.

The textile art of Kibitka is equally rich and beautiful, ranging from the most decorative handmade carpets and kelims from Iran, Afghanistan and Turkey to a stunning selection of brightly coloured, subtly embroidered shawls, jackets, blankets and 'throws' in wool or silk deriving from every corner of Central Asia and the Indian sub-continent. You can also find exotic Uzbek Ikat Chapans (traditional tribal cloaks) and even the sought-after older brass and copper household items, including the rarest brass oil lamps, once made in Sri Lanka in the time it was known as Ceylon.
